Professional Career: Alexander Lütgendorf is an English and Austrian qualified senior counsel in the Dubai office of Amereller. He specialises in international arbitration, serving as counsel and arbitrator. A civil and common law advocate, he is familiar with civil, common and Islamic law jurisdictions. In addition to his work as an arbitration practitioner, Mr Lütgendorf represents clients in crossborder litigation before national courts throughout the Middle East and North Africa and has experience in conducting internal investigations. He regularly provides counsel on strategy for dispute avoidance and resolution, and deals with conflict of laws and jurisdictional matters. Mr Lütgendorf also has a strong commercial practice supporting multinational and medium-sized companies in the region, including contract drafting and negotiation, commercial transactions and corporate matters.
Mr Lütgendorf is included in the roster of arbitrators of several major arbitral institutions. He is a member of the ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR and active in the Commission’s policy initiatives, including as a member and country rapporteur of the ICC Task Force on National Rules of Procedure for Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Awards under the New York Convention 1958 and member of the ICC Task Force on Trusts and Arbitration, and he participated in the revision of the ICC ADR Rules, ICC Rules for Expertise and ICC Dispute Board Rules. Mr Lütgendorf also served as observer delegate to the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) Working Group on Arbitration and Conciliation participating in the revision process of the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules. He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a number of international arbitration associations and interest groups.
Mr Lütgendorf speaks regularly at conferences and seminars on arbitration topics. In addition, he authored the Chapter on Austria in the ICC Guide to National Procedures for Recognition and Enforcement of New York Convention Awards in a Special Supplement of the ICC Bulletin 2012, co-authored “Arbitration in Infrastructure Markets” in Liberalisation of Austrian Infrastructure Markets (2003) and served as Consulting Editor-in-Chief of the Vindobona Journal of International Commercial Law and Arbitration (2007-2015).
