Arbitration Experience: Ilias has served as arbitrator in the fields of energy, infrastructure, state contracts/concessions, international commerce and trade and military procurement, with a special focus in the MENA region, Central Asia, Greece and the UK. He was the Head of International Law and Arbitration of a Legal500 law firm for several years.

Professional Career: Ilias is a Professor of International Law and Arbitration at Hamad bin Khalifa University (Qatar Foundation), Adjunct Professor of international law at Georgetown University Qatar and senior associate fellow at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (IALS) University of London. He has been in academia since 1998, with posts at Westminster, Brunel, Harvard, Trier, Miami, Lausanne and others. His expertise includes public international law, international commercial arbitration, investment law and arbitration, international development law, sports law and international human rights. He has advised private clients, international law firms and inter‐governmental organizations (UN, UNDP, EU, Council of Europe and others) in all the above fields. He has written more than 130 peer reviewed articles in leading journals, such as the American Journal of International LawBritish Yearbook of International LawEuropean Journal of International LawArbitration International, American Review of International Arbitration and the Journal of International Arbitration. He has authored 15 books, including: Introduction to International Arbitration (Cambridge University Press, 2015); Commentary to the UNCITRAL Model Law on International Arbitration (Cambridge University Press, 2020), with P Ortolani et al); International Law (Oxford University Press, 2019, 4th edition, with E Papastavridis); International Human Rights Law and Practice (Cambridge University Press, 2020, 3rd edition, with L Oette); Sovereign Debt and Human Rights (Oxford University Press, 2018, with C Lumina).
